(Maribor, 4th of April 2012) Company Vorteks d.o.o. is the winner of this year’s competition of start-up companies Start:up Slovenia. At today’s gala ceremony that took place during the international business conference PODIM in Hotel Habakuk in Maribor, the co-founder of the company Peter Frantar received the winning crystal statue symbolizing Slovenian start-up of the year 2012, from the hands of the minister for economic development and technology, Radovan Žerjav, MSc. Cheque in the value of 10,000 EUR and training CEED TOP CLASS was given to the winner by the technical manager of the competition Matej Rus, MSc and the director of the Slovene Enterprise Fund, Maja Tomanič Vidović, MSc. The special recognition for the ‘Best written business plan’ was given to the company Weber Marine d.o.o.
Vorteks d.o.o. is a young company combining engineering knowledge of the company Siop elektronika d.o.o. and lean business environment of Zaria iM d.o.o. The first challenge is the commercialization of the new type of a brushless and coreless flat electromotor whose main advantage over other competitive flat motors is the innovative coil. The copper coil is thinly coated on the surface, while the technology of multilayer circuits is able to ensure a minimal air gap. Because individual phases in layers are offset between each other, the acceleration is steady and a large contact surface of the coil ensures quick heat dissipation and this in turn ensures the possibility of quick big overload when, for example, starting the motor. Increasing strength is simple – by adding new thin plates with coil. The motor is simple to make and extremely adaptable. The development of the motor is in the phase of the conceptual model that the company plans to further develop according to product demands of the manufacturers of final applications (e.g. engines for electrical vehicles, garden tools, household appliances, etc.). The first final product is being developed in collaboration with the biggest European manufacturer of compressor engines for vacuum cleaners, the Slovenian company Domel d.o.o. For their victory, the company received 10,000 EUR of prize money, one-year training CEED TOP CLASS and a crystal statue made in the glass factory Rogaška in collaboration with the Slovenian fashion designer Maja Ferme.
The company Weber Marine d.o.o. had, in the opinion of the expert committee, prepared the ‘Best written business plan’. ‘The business plan of the company Weber Marine is a clear, objective, understandable and visually-perfected product’ commented the decision prof. Miroslav Rebernik, head of the committee.
The winner of this year’s competition was chosen out of 5 finalists by the 17 membered expert committee, led by Miroslav Rebernik and consisting of prominent entrepreneurs, investors, support environment representatives and professors. Finalists that were chosen by the pre-selection committee were: Vorteks d.o.o., Weber Marine, Replikateh d.o.o., Animacel d.o.o. and JAFRAL d.o.o.
A record 124 start-up companies applied with their business plan to this year’s, already fifth, competition organised by Venture Factory together with Technology Park Ljubljana and JAPTI. The committee chose 5 finalists out of these 124. ‘The Slovenian competition for start-up companies is increasingly asserting itself as the central media for recognizing and awarding future business stars who try to put their knowledge and innovative ideas into business practice. In the five rounds of the competition so far, 257 young innovative companies participated, while more than 3000 individuals participated at workshops and events. This year, we connected the competition with the tender P2, at the initiative of the Ministry of Economic Development. By achieving good results, the participants of the competition were able to get up to 25 points from the total of a 100 possible within the tender P2,’ said Matej Rus, MSc, expert manager of the competition Start:up Slovenia.
The holder of the project Start:up Slovenia is Venture Factory (IRP Institute). As co-organisers, the following participate in the implementation of the competition: JAPTI and the Ministry of Economy, Technology Park Ljubljana. As strategic partners from the economy, Nova KBM with the Business centre NKBM and Microsoft Slovenia with Microsoft Innovation centre participate. The national strategic partner of the competition Start:up Slovenia are Slovene Enterprise Fund and the Slovenian Association of Technology Parks and Incubators. Strategic partner of the competition is the Development centre for information and communication technologies (RC ICT).
