Microsoft announced the winners of 11th Imagine Cup – the biggest global competition of student technologists, developers and future entrepreneurs who competed in the development of innovative projects.
Slovenian team DORA was amongst the best in the world. They took an excellent 2nd place in the prestigious competition category Innovations with their solution that will help improve efficiency in health institutions and optimise operation procedures. The winning projects were announced for three categories – Innovations, Games and Global Citizenship – as well as for three challenges and eight special award categories possible thanks to the competition sponsors. More than 800 students, judges, partners of the competition, guests and media representatives attended the final award ceremony in St. Petersburg’s theatre Alexandrinsky. 87 student teams from 71 countries participated at the worldwide finals of Imagine Cup. Throughout the year, they had won different local and web selections. During the year-round course of the competition, Microsoft granted financial resources and other awards in the total value of more than 1 million USD to the best students.

Slovenian team DORA (Doctors Operational Research Assistant) took 2nd place in the competition category Innovations at the worldwide finals of the competition Imagine Cup and with that, it marked the best Slovenian standingso far. Team members include Kristjan Košič, Boštjan Arzenšek, Andraž Leitgeb and Zedin Salkanovič that come from University of Maribor, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Matej Vogrinčič that comes from the University Medical Centre of Maribor. Their solution will help medical institutions increase efficiency and optimise operation procedures.
This year for the first time, Slovenia was represented by two student teams at the finals of the Imagine Cup. Alongside team DORA, team Beezinga also did well with their system for analysis and early warning of events in apiaries, and attracted a big interest of media (TechCrunch) and potential investors.
Next Imagine Cup in Redmond
The final competition of Imagine Cup 2014 will take place in American Redmond, in Microsoft’s headquarters.

The Slovenian selection for Imagine Cup 2013 was organized by Venture Factory, RC IKT from Kranj, Technology Park Ljubljana and Microsoft Centre for Innovations, alongside with numerous non-governmental organisations and companies. The main sponsor of the competition is Microsoft.
